True VHS VS 1996 Camcorder in Central Park NYC - JVC GR-DV1 MiniDV

Let's compare the True VHS iPhone/Android app with a 1996 camcorder--JVC GR-DV1 MiniDV.

Apps and filters are great, but they can never be the real thing.

Do you like the old tape look?

Would you use a camcorder today?

What People Are Asking…

Is True VHS better than a camcorder?

True VHS is an app you can get on an iPhone or Android phone, so it will never be the real thing, but it can get really close and be more convenient to have over a physical camcorder. You do have to keep in mind that True VHS is a subscription based service unlike other apps like Rarevision VHS that come with a one time fee for the pro version.

Is it worth buying a camcorder?

Yes, old camcorders can give you a vintage/retro look that can be difficult to recreate with a filter through an app or editing software.

What are camcorders good for?

Camcorders are good for getting plug and play video. Sometimes you don't get all the manual settings you would find on a regular modern DSLR or mirrorless camera. Camcorders are also specifically for video and not really photos--some let you grab snapshots, but they are not typically the quality you would find on a dedicated photography camera. You can also record for a long time with camcorders--they don't normally come with recording limits.

Are people still using camcorders?

The vintage look is really popular today, so you can find my influencers like YouTubers getting the retro look with a camcorder.

How many hours can a camcorder record?

It does depend on the camcorder you are using but your record limit is usually based on how long your battery will last if you're not plugged in or the amount of video your media can hold--the tape length or the media card size, like SD or Compact Flash.
