Sure, it is! If you're looking at an old camcorder, it's great for the vintage look, but there are modern camcorders that will rival current mirrorless cameras too.

Is a camcorder better than a smartphone?

It really depends on the camcorder--there are some that you can get a great image from. There are others that are kinda junk, but you shouldn't think of all camcorders producing a poor image quality.

How long do camcorders record for?

That depends on the media you're using. If it's a tape, it depends on the length of the tape. If it's a card, it depends on the size of the card. Camcorders do not usually have recording limits like some modern DSLR and mirrorless cameras.
