What’s up?
A Delicious Lens You Can’t Eat
Hello, it's me–I'm Steven Allen. How are you doing today?
Welcome back–it's been a minute. I'm glad you're here. I'm glad we're here together today.
We're talking about this Olympus PANCAKE lens–9mm f8 fisheye lens–for the Sony RX0ii with the Back-Bone MFT adapter. My mouth is full…
Let’s Talk!
Are ALL the BEST Lenses the Flat Ones?
I’ve seen all of your comments about the 8mm app–I know there was an update. I’m working on that video, and that will be coming soon.
I don't know if it’ll be the next video or the one after that. I’m posting music videos as well, so it’s in the works–I have half of it filmed.
Thank you for sticking around…being here…being you… I just want to let you know that I hear you, and I'm holding space for you. Thank you so much for being you.
So today I decided that I wanted to take this camera out into New York City proper, meaning Manhattan, Central Park to be exact, and take some photos…AND see what we get.
Since it’s an f8 lens that requires A LOT of light, I'm outside during the day.
How many lenses do you have? 😲 Click To TweetThat's kind of not the usual for me. Typically I'm like, oh, I'm going to shoot a video–let me get ready. By the time I'm outside, it’s pitch dark with all the lights. It’s “dark-sighted” outside.
It was “chill factor,” but we got through it.
I do have links to the products I talk about in this post listed below, so you can check that out.
If you’d like to shoot video with this lens, it's fine. I mean, it's not the best quality. I'm not really satisfied with the pictures. It looks kind of like a mid-2000s digital camera.
This lens is not only for the Sony RX0 one-inch sensor modified camera with a micro 4/3 lens mount, but also for any camera that accepts micro 4/3 lenses.

I like this Olympus pancake lens because it has a lens cover attached to it that’s very easy to open and close. I guess it could be considered a body cap lens too.
I thought I wanted to keep body cap lenses on all of my cameras, so when I pull them out of my bag, I can just start taking photos immediately.
It is a fisheye lens, but it doesn't look crazy fisheye…like you're filming skateboards…

9mm on this one-inch sensor means you have to multiply 9 by 2.7 to figure out what the full frame equivalent is, so that number would be 24.3, but it works.
Usually 24 feels too close for vlogging, but because it’s such a small camera, you can just hold it further back with your hand.
The camera is not super light, but the lens is. I do need to have a little microphone attached whenever I want to record video, because this modified mount covers the internal microphone on the Sony RX0ii.
The images didn't come out like I would’ve liked for them to come out–I think I needed more light.
I realized while using this camera outside that the focus for the lens is all the way to the right. So at the 0.2 mark, that's where things are in focus, close and far away.
I think that means there’s not actually a working infinity focus–maybe because this is a modified camera. On a regular micro 4/3 mount camera, it should be fine. You should be able to focus with the dial and get infinity there.

One More Thing!
Sometimes SMALLER is BETTER…
I really haven't seen that many videos on YouTube of people with this camera, so I think I'm like the pioneer of this. I love this camera with this lens, despite the less than stellar visuals.
The build quality of the lens is plastic, but it's not bad. I did watch some reviews, and they were saying that the focus knob is super flimsy. It’s not the strongest resistance, but it’s ok. If you stick it in a bag, it probably will move, but I think it's fine. I thought it was going to be super loose, like you could just shake it, and it would move around, but no, it's not like that.
Yes, the Sony RX0 battery is kind of trash, but I just bring a lot of extra batteries.
Thank you for visiting today. I really do/did enjoy using this camera. I have a whole bunch of other lenses to use with this camera–more videos and posts to come!
Take a little time to make art and be brilliant–I'll talk to you later–goodbye.
What People Are Asking…
Sadly, probably not… Will there be a Sony RX0iii?
Well not anymore…before the modification, it's waterproof, drop-proof and crush-proof--after the mod, it's still sturdy but NOT waterproof. Is a modified Sony RX0 waterproof?
Do you think phones have the best cameras? 😨 Click To Tweet
I think so, but it's quite expensive for such a small camera. Is a modified Sony RX0ii worth it?
The 2nd version of the Sony RX0 has quite a few upgrades, including a flip up screen, but it still lacks in-body stabilization like the 1st one, so that makes it kind of difficult to use for vlogging--but where there's a will, there's a way! Is the Sony RX0 mark ii better than the mark i?
It's really small, with a one-inch sensor, so it's really more like a C camera, but you could use it as a B with an alpha series camera. At the same time, there are no rules, so why not try it out as a primary camera? Can you use a modded Sony RX0ii as an A camera?
